LICINISO Weekly 1 - 7 June 2026 Thumbnail

This week’s edition of LICINISO explores the relationship between ideology, culture, and political power in Swaziland. The publication examines how religion has historically been used to reinforce systems of domination and maintain social and political control, while highlighting the need for class consciousness and revolutionary transformation.

In the lead article, Cde Bafanabakhe Sacolo, Deputy Chairperson of the Communist Party of Swaziland, analyses the relationship between religion, monarchy, and social conditions in Swaziland. The article explores how religious institutions and narratives have been incorporated into structures of authority and how these ideas influence political consciousness among the masses.

The edition also presents a theoretical contribution by Cde Bonkhe Nxumalo, CPS Central Committee Member, examining the primary and secondary contradictions in Swaziland. The article analyses the contradiction between monarchical authority and democratic aspirations, as well as the struggle between royal culture and popular culture as an important terrain of political contestation.

The publication further explores the relationship between political power, economic control, cultural institutions, land ownership, labour exploitation, and democratic struggle. It highlights the role of working-class organisation and popular mobilisation in advancing democratic transformation.

Through historical and contemporary analysis, this edition contributes to ongoing discussions on democracy, culture, class struggle, and the future direction of the people’s movement in Swaziland.
